History of WHHS

Westchester Hebrew High School, originally located at the Lincoln Park Jewish Center, in Yonkers, New York, opened its doors in 1972 with just a ninth grade . At that time, the Jewish communities of Westchester and Fairfield Counties, while quite vibrant, were much smaller than today. Most families who sought a Jewish high school experience for their children had to resort to sending their children on a long daily commute or to send them to live away from home. WHHS filled that educational gap for many students who would otherwise have been unable to continue their Jewish education. Meeting this goal of providing a local, personalized, dual curriculum, quality education to the Jewish high school students from Westchester, the Bronx, and Fairfield County and beyond continues to be the mission of WHHS.

The families who helped found Westchester Hebrew High School not only came from all over Westchester County, but also represented a broad spectrum of religious observance and affiliation. In fact, many of the founding families were members of Conservative congregations such as Beth El of New Rochelle and Lincoln Park in Yonkers who then had limited Jewish educational options and were determined to provide a Modern Orthodox education for their children. WHHS continues to pride itself on the diversity of its student body and its appeal to families and students from all walks of Jewish life.

Rabbi Baruch Majerowicz joined the WHHS faculty and administration in 1974. WHHS was truly blessed for the next 32 years as Rabbi Majerowicz steered the school from its humble beginnings in Yonkers to its current home located on 27 beautiful acres on the Long Island Sound in Mamaroneck, New York. Rabbi Jeffrey Beer assumed the helm of WHHS in 2006 with the retirement of Rabhbi Majerowicz. Along with Dr. Nancy Block, Dean of Student Life, WHHS has continued to grow and serve its students in the best possible ways.

In 1974, the first graduating class at Westchester Hebrew High School had six students including Ron Warmflash. We are very proud to have become the high school of choice for the children of many of our early alumni. Ron and Doris have already sent three of their four sons to WHHS!
